Return of the bike club
nathan - April 7, 2026, 6 p.m.
Today was the work bike club's first ride of the season. We tried last week, but nobody could go. Today, though, nobody could go. Some people had broken bikes, others had left their bikes at home (including in other countries) and one had come to work by e-bike.
That's ok! E-bikes are bikes and therefore eligible for riding along with the bike club, and the weather was amazing. So Maryam and I went for a ride to Berkel en Rodenrijs.
After we got to her house, a pickup crashed into a cyclist. I had a chat with a dispatcher from 112 and emergency vehicles started arriving shortly. Eventually they had at least 2 police cars, an ambulance, and a helicopter.
The ride back to the office was relatively uneventful. No map today, but:
Bike computer reports
Max speed: 45.8 km/h
Average speed: 21.7 km/h
Total distance: 16.83 km
GNSS numbers:
Max speed: 49.0 km/h
Average speed: 21.8 km/h
Total distance: 21.2 km
I find those top speeds highly suspect. I don't remember going absurdly fast anywhere, but I don't know how the bike computer ended up with such a high top speed. Maybe on the way down an underpass? I did spend some time in my highest gear.
